Do you ever get the urge to just up and move? New city, new life, new job, new friends…it’s so darn tempting! But whenever I try to follow through, I chicken out – there’s always some reason to stay (mostly family and effort). In the past my ideal destinations have included Vancouver (even got so far as contacting realtors for apartments), California, and Seattle – west coast or bust.

Currently I’m considering Richmond b/c it’s beautiful, I know some awesome people there, and it’s significantly cheaper than the DC area. Also NYC. I’m pretty much insanely jealous of people who live there right now for two main reasons – Linsanity and Fashion Week.

Think about it – the Knicks have Jeremy Lin who’s come out of basic obscurity to be the hottest show in town. The team is terrible – even though they have Melo and Stoudamire – but the tickets are selling like crazy! He’s single handedly giving the city and its fan base something to get excited over.

Plus, it’s a true underdog story – kid sends DVD of basketball skills to Ivy League schools in hopes of scholarship; isn’t awarded any (Ivy doesn’t provide for athletics); attends (and plays for) Harvard; graduates with a prestigious degree; and after a brief stint with the Warriors ends up playing in the brightest lights in the league. What’s more, he’s actually winning. I feel traitorous for saying this, but John Wall could learn a thing or two…

I’m sure that Lin is eventually going to go the way of Tebow – an unguardable anomaly until someone breaks down enough footage – but until then, I wish I was a Knicks fan. Effing New Yorkers have all the luck! They just won the Super Bowl – can’t they share the wealth?! Selfish bastards.

I may not be the most fashion-forward dresser in my day to day activities (stupid cube life), but if I had the monies I’m sure I’d make more than one best-dressed list. Until that (inevitably) happens I’ll have to contend myself with critiquing collections from afar. My two favorites for Fall 2012 were Marc Jacobs (no surprise there) and Donna Karan (say whaaa??)

The Marc Jacobs collection bordered on Eliza Doolittle-meets the Mad Hatter, but I have to give Mr. Jacobs props for his fabric choices. He always puts out incredible knitwear, this time being no exception. His use of a scarf/wrap hybrid closed with an oversized safety pin has me in serious Lustville. I’m sure that’s one look that will make the transition to ready-wear. And when it does, you can bet I’ll be first in line to grab my wool stole.

Being that I’m a huge Boardwalk Empire fan, anything remotely 20’s-ish is bound to grab my attention. This time the Donna Karan collection did just that – I love the juxtaposition of structured menswear-inspired pieces with delicate chiffon and flashy beadwork. The dress below is possibly the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen. If I owned it, I’d wear it everywhere. No buts about it.

What do you think of the collections thus far? There’s a great NYT article chronicling Christian Siriano’s reception from the fashion industry. It’s pretty interesting because it details how much of what’s shown on the runway differs from what actually makes it into stores. Sigh. I miss Project Runway.

One of my earliest memories is of the Redskins in the Super Bowl in 1991. I was in first grade and my mom allowed me to stay up and watch the first half. It seemed so late, but in retrospect I was probably still in bed by 8pm. Either way, that experience is now a distant memory, as it’s officially the 20th anniversary of the last Redskins Super Bowl win. The Washington Post provided a great chronicle of that event here.

For that matter, this is also the 20th anniversary of any Washington sports team playing reasonably well. It’s a well-known fact that Washington teams are all teases – first round playoff losses, second round losses, lack of playoff appearances – we have a plethora of failures.

But enough negativity for one day – I’m going to focus on an awesome article from Grantland – ‘The 10 Best Super Bowls in Trivia History’ – written by, wait for it, Ken Jennings(!) You remember him, right? He was on Jeopardy! for aggeeeeessss. Rather than reposting the entire article, I’m going to highlight a few of my favorite trivialities that he cites. The full list can be found here.

10. Super Bowl XIX – Dolphins v. 49ers – ‘…this game is mostly of note to fans of movie trivia, since a fictional San Francisco-Miami championship was a major plot point in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Any Given Sunday…and Teri Hatcher was a 49ers cheerleader in 1985…’

5. Super Bowl XXIII – Bengals v. 49ers – ‘…as the story goes, with the 49ers down three with three minutes to go, Montana calmed down a nervous huddle by pointing into the crowd and asking, “Isn’t that John Candy?” Then he proceeded to march the team 92 yards downfield for a game-winning touchdown to John Taylor. Cool customer…’

4. Super Bowl XLI – Colts v. Bears – ‘…first Super Bowl win by an African-American coach (the Colts’ Tony Dungy) or the only score ever to come one the game’s first play (the Bear’s Devin Hester returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown just 14 seconds in…’

3. Super Bowl XXI – Giants v. Broncos – ‘…It ended with Giants coach Bill Parcells getting a barrel of Gatorade dumped over him – a historic Super Bowl first! Then Phil Simms got a $75,000 check…for telling a camera that he was “going to Disney World”…and Bud Light’s controversial spokes-terrier Spuds MacKenzie made his TV debut…’

spuds mackenzie is ranked sixth on stan's top ten favorite dogs he counts down in 'the people vs. martin sugar'.

Those are the examples that I geeked particularly hard over, but there are so many more! I sincerely hope that if I ever end up on Jeopardy! a Super Bowl category comes up. I’d run the table (thanks Ken!) Here’s hoping this weekend’s game proves at least as entertaining as the last time the Giants and Pats met in the big game…
